The building was designed by architect Joseph Finger as a bank in 1925 and converted into a performance venue in 1979 by Sanford and Susan Criner. This transformation marked the start of its role as an important music destination in Houston. The venue has become a center for blues and soul music fans in Houston who gather to experience live performances rooted in these traditions. Visitors encounter a community that celebrates both local and touring artists connected to the city's musical heritage. The original bank vault remains intact within the building and now serves as a dressing room for performing artists.
